Back in the Saddle Again: My Social Media Ride

Taking a few jaunts in the ever-evolving world of social media has caused me to push the pause button on blogging. But while I’ve been away, I’ve learned so much – the ins and outs, rights and wrongs, successes and failures of social media. I’m ready to return, but not before I look back to my beginnings in social media.

MySpace was first. The strange, yet exciting way to put my life on the internet and share it beyond AOL Instant Messenger ‘away messages.’ I jumped to Facebook when I reached high school to be in constant contact with my friends. It wasn’t until I entered college at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University when I began to fully appreciate social media. The ability to connect with friends across the country beyond email or online chat, through music, photos, links and shared conversation was invaluable to feeling at home in a new world.

I now realize that growing up with technology and social media has made it an inseparable part of my life. I’m connected through multiple devices in multiple places at one time, and can’t imagine a day without it. It has helped me find internship and job opportunities via Linkedin, grow my online chloe + isabel jewelry sales business, connect with thought leaders on Twitter, and prepared me, through firsthand experience, for a career in fields becoming increasingly more focused on social media, advertising and marketing. After recently completing the HootSuite University Social Media Education Program, I am now a certified social media expert.

My worlds have collided in the best way possible. My passions, education and career have combined to form a transportable, accessible and traceable path of my life, an idea other users and marketers alike will share use of for years to come.

Loved your blog post! Maybe you could expand on what social media platforms you’ve used to help you with chloe + isabel jewelry sales business.

Thanks Jenny! I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future posts! I actually use Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Polyvore and Linkedin to promote not only by online boutique, but also the company and the recruitment of other chloe + isabel Merchandisers.

  2. which platforms work best for you?

      Michael,

I really like the immediacy of Twitter, but I love the visual appeal of Pinterest or Facebook. It just depends on what I am posting and how I would like people to respond. Facebook works best if I’m trying to get friends to communicate with one another about an image or event and Twitter is best for sending out a more general message to anyone with a link they can go to for more info.

Nice post, Megan. I really like your writing style. Looking forward to reading more posts from you. I know you wrote that you took a pause from blogging, but how long have you been blogging for?

    • mrmurp02 says:

      Thanks Jackie!

My previous posts were for a class sophomore year which is when I began blogging. It’s been a few years since I’ve been an active/formal blogger, but I’ve been using microblogging sites like Twitter instead. Though I’m excited to get back into the swing of things!

I really enjoyed reading your blog post on your personal experiences with social media. I found it to be very insightful how you incorporated the importance and benefits social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. provides. Going off of what Jenny said, I would really like to learn more about what social media platforms you used for your chloe + isabel jewelry sales business. What is your opinion of Hootsuite? Do you find it effective to work all your platforms at once?

    • mrmurp02 says:

Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed reading it!

HootSuite is a great tool and really helps me to save time, especially with Twitter and Linkedin so I can schedule posts. In terms of Facebook, I prefer to post directly on Facebook for a few reasons:

      1. Some of my posts are inspired by daily posts from other Facebook brand pages so I’m on Facebook reading other posts frequently.
      2. I like checking the Facebook Pages Admin panel often so since I’m already on Facebook a lot, I just post from there.
      3. I usually post pictures and links on Facebook and it’s easier for me to see what I’m posting on Facebook than it is on HootSuite.

I can also post directly from my online boutique to Facebook so that’s another tool I use to promote my boutique and position as a chloe + isabel Merchandiser.
